Is it possible to avoid venipuncture?

We have all had to go to the hospital or a clinical laboratory to undergo a process of blood extraction (venipuncture), during which a sufficient quantity of blood is drawn from a vein. However, less invasive alternatives that are much less traumatic for children are also feasible. These are based on puncturing a finger or heel and the subsequent deposition of a few drops of blood onto a clinical filter paper. This procedure produces to the so-called dried blood spots (DBS), which give title to the European project that we present on this website, which is being financed by the INTERREG V-A Spain-France-Andorra Program (Poctefa 2014-2020).

DBS Project

Use of DBS has been growing in interest for several reasons. First, this procedure is ideal for neonatal screening. Additionally, it has been proven that the DBS present other important advantages.

Stability and ease of storage

Dried blood samples are more stable than conventional blood liquid samples and can be easily stored even at room temperature.

Less invasive approach

These samples are much less invasive and can be prepared at home by the patients themselves or their relatives. They can be easily sent to the lab by standard mail.

Higher quality of life

This procedure entails an improvement in the quality of life for chronically ill patients and/or for those with reduced mobility, particularly for those who need frequent controls and who live in areas far from hospitals or clinical laboratories.

This European project investigates the implementation of DBS in two specific areas

Control of patients with hip or knee prostheses. It is estimated that each year, 2000 people receive hip and knee prostheses in Zaragoza and Pyrénées-Atlantiques, a number that increases every year.

The diagnosis of Wilson’s disease, a rare genetic disorder that is associated with a problem in copper metabolism. It is simple to treat but very difficult to diagnose, and can be fatal without proper treatment.
